Let us understand why we do pooja. For that let us explore how human civilization functioned during the early days.
When man lived without a roof over his head and in the wild, there was awareness that a supreme power was in control and a sense of reverence was birthed.
Pooja is a symbolic way to demonstrate that our mind, body and desires are subject to God and is a deliberate act of surrender to a force that is stronger than us. In the Hindu culture, pooja is the most popular form of worship and can be performed directly or by a priest.
As per hindu scriptures, pooja has been divided into three segments: Mantras, Yantras and Tantras.
Mantra: It is a constant chant of particular words to appease the almighty.
Yantras: Symbolic writing in various forms of metals.
Tantras: Tantras is nothing but more powerful mantras. The right “vidhi” and right guide for the same is most important, else it will harm the worshipper himself.
- There are two aspects. On the outside it appeases the one who is worshipped and inside it helps the worshipper connect with the deity on a deeper level. Poojas can also be done for personal gain, and can simultaneously be done as an act of devotion and surrender to God.
- The most important purpose of pooja is to declare one’s devotion and love for God . A deeper concentration with God can be attained with pooja as well as a desire to be committed, with a fulfilling experience to achieve what one seeks in this material world.
- Pooja purifies the heart, removes negative thoughts, balances emotions and creates harmonious vibrations and a steady mind. It also unifies the 5 sheaths of the human body (food, energy, mind, wisdom and bliss).
There are many benefits of chanting mantras, but the premise is one– In the Hindu Holy Scriptures, mantras are considered divine because they bring about powerful energies and vibrations in the body of the one who chants them. This energy is automatically connected to the energy present in the universe. We are able to achieve our goals through this intervention and the mantras are thus deemed effective.
It’s a healthy practice to chant mantras, and over a period of time increase the number of chants as this will aid in channelizing and developing our inner energies. It is important to heed to the advice of your astrologer as only the right mantra that is chanted to a specific deity will yield desired results. Mantra chanting can never cause any harm but an individual will only reap huge benefits if it is done the right way.
There are certain guidelines to follow before and while chanting mantras –
- Choose a clean and bright place that carries an aura of calm. It should not be noisy as you may tend to get distracted and lose focus.
- Ensure that the place is pure and wear comfortable clothes as this will help you concentrate better. This way you can also chant for a longer duration with deep contemplation.
- Do not sit on the floor directly and always place a mat. Remain seated facing the north or east while chanting.
*Remember, performing poojas or chanting mantras alone is not sufficient to bring in good luck, happiness or prosperity. Hard work is a prerequisite, and chanting the right mantra and doing pooja a certain way to the right deity is also important.
